The exhibition "ANYTHING BUT FLAT! From Surface to Space" with works from the Siegfried and Jutta Weishaupt Collection.
With this collection exhibition, the kunsthalle weishaupt highlights the multifaceted nature and appeal of the cross-genre, dimension-breaking art form of the relief: the spatialization of the flat image - right up to the freestanding sculpture - offers much to discover and challenges our perception. However, visitors can not only explore the various techniques and materials visually with their eyes, but also (re)experience them for themselves at hands-on stations.
Since the 1960s in particular, artists have intensively explored the transition from flat surfaces to three-dimensionality. Superimpositions, cuts, sculptures, interplays of volume and omission, positive and negative forms - a variety of new forms of expression and the seizure of space in pictorial works have emerged and continue to emerge.
The exhibition does not present the art-historical development of the hybrid in the intermediate area from (pictorial) surface to space (installation). Rather, an outstanding selection - in the truest sense of the word - focuses on exemplary exhibits, creative forms and techniques.
In addition to the artists mentioned above, the exhibition includes John McCracken, Henrik Eiben, Erich Hauser, Charles Hinman, Andy Ouchi, Katja Strunz, Vincent Szarek, Günther Uecker and Beat Zoderer.
