When Colors Find Form

How does color become form? When does a surface begin to breathe, a line to vibrate, a grid to come to life? The exhibition "When Colors Find Form" is devoted to the fascinating relationship between color, form, and space – and impressively demonstrates how surprising dynamism can arise from clarity and reduction.

On display are both selected prints and major canvas paintings from the Siegfried and Jutta Weishaupt Collection. All participating artists share the question of how color and form interact, intensify one another, unsettle or calm. They work in an abstract and non-objective manner, in order to devote themselves entirely to this investigation and to make the impact of color and form in their purest guise perceptible.

Numerous works from the collection that have never been shown before, including pieces by Geneviève Claisse and Georg Karl Pfahler, open up new and surprising perspectives. With clear geometric circular forms and radiant color, Claisse impressively demonstrates how a vibrating, almost musical movement can emerge from precise order. Pfahler, by contrast, powerfully sets fields of color against one another – decisive and full of energy.

A central reference point of the exhibition is Josef Albers' work Interaction of Color. It is complemented by extensive portfolio works in which his serial working method makes the perception of color as a living, relational event impressively tangible.

"When Colors Find Form" invites visitors to look closely – and to experience how diversity can emerge from reduction, vitality from order, and form from color.

The exhibition includes works by, among others, Josef Albers, Hans Arp, Max Bill, Geneviève Claisse, Ulrich Erben, Karl Gerstner, Peter Halley, Auguste Herbin, Charles B. Hinman, Georg Karl Pfahler, Frank Stella, Victor Vasarely.
