A slate-clad city tower serving as a vertical art gallery

13rd May—13rd Oct 2026
Silder tile

In Ulm's Metzgerturm, the leaning city tower is transformed into a vertical gallery: across five levels, historic architecture meets contemporary art. The Kunstverein Ulm brings the monument to life with changing exhibitions, offering a fresh way to experience the tower.

In Ulm's Metzgerturm, a medieval watchtower and city tower is being transformed into an extraordinary art venue. The striking, 36.1-metre-high structure on the city wall leans by 2.05 metres – and is becoming a vertical gallery in which historical substance and contemporary art are closely interwoven.

The opening event, from 13 May 2026, will be an exhibition by the artist Johannes Pfeiffer, whose rope installation has been rewriting the cityscape with the leaning tower since 2022. Inside, steep wooden staircases lead to five compact levels, which the Ulm Art Association will fill with changing exhibitions. In this way, one of the city's most popular landmarks is being carefully renovated, preserved in accordance with conservation guidelines, and at the same time made accessible as a cultural space with regular opening hours.

The gallery in the Metzgerturm combines architectural heritage, city history and contemporary art within a compact space – an immersive urban experience in Ulm's old town, just a few steps from the Danube, the city walls and the fishermen's and tanners' quarters.
