We do not know what the people of the Stone Age thought of this. What we know is that this sculpture made of mammoth ivory (found in the nearby UNESCO World Heritage Site Hohlenstein-Stadel) is one of the oldest works of art of mankind and still fascinates even after 40,000 years!

It is the largest and most spectacular ivory figure from the excavations in the Lone Valley around 1939 – the Lion Man. The mixture of man and animal was carved from the right tusk of a young mammoth during the ice age. The legs and the upright posture are human, the head and the paws are those of a cat of prey.

The lion man and other archaeological finds can be admired in a permanent exhibition at the Museum Ulm.
