Ulm in the winter: A child-friendly day out in the two-state city

Family on Tour in Ulm and Neu-Ulm.

Ulm offers families with children a plethora of options for joint activities – and this is no different during the cold and darker season. Here you will find a few tips on how to spend a wonderful day out with children in the Danube twin city, whatever the weather. Have fun exploring!

There are a number of varied indoor activities that the family can visit in autumn and winter, too. The Donaubad, the children´s museum (Kindermuseum) in the Edwin-Scharff-Museum, the natural history museum (Naturkundemuseum) or zoo (Tiergarten Ulm) in the Friedrichsau – Ulm and Neu-Ulm has plenty in store for young ones.

Tiergarten Ulm is always worth a visit. A whole lot of fun for every age group! No matter whether you simply want to sit in silence and observe the fish, or feed donkeys and goats in the outdoor enclosures, the Tiergarten is the ultimate destination all year round.

The Tiergarten is accessed via a tunnel teeming with native fish species, after which the path leads past all manner of animals in terrariums, aquariums, in the tropical house and on the outdoor area. Cute highlights are of course the pot-bellied pigs and the comical meerkats. Even young children have a lot to marvel at here.

With the annual card, visitors from the region are likely to get their money back in no time. This also means you can come and visit your furry friends whenever you like, and even short visits are worthwhile as the Tiergarten is open all year long. In the cold season, you simply need a thick coat in order to visit the outdoor area. You can then warm your fingers in the cosy tropical house while catching a glimpse of monkeys, crocodiles and all types of birds.

Small extra tip: Children (aged 4 years and older) can even celebrate their birthday in the Tiergarten!

Natural diversity and natural history – all this is showcased at the naturkundliche Bildungszentrum Ulm.
There are many small stations for children such as testing their own sense of smell in a scent puzzle. Display boards will impart adults accompanying children and older children with many interesting facts about exhibited animals from both the past and present, about their habitat and nature.

The cosy reading corner is a great place for tired visitors to relax and immerse themselves in one of the books on all types of animal species and natural history topics.

This small museum is open all-year round and is even worth a short visit thanks to its low entrance price. Its location in the heart of the city also makes the museum attractive for a small detour following a shopping spree in order to keep the kids happy.

Thanks to alternating exhibitions, the children's museum (Kindermuseum) has something to offer the whole year round and there is always something new to discover. Particularly interesting are the various stations right across the museum where children can learn a thing or two, while also giving it a whirl themselves and being active. ›Hands off!‹ does not apply in the children's museum. Touching is expressly desired. Learning new things in a playful way. That means it is great fun even for the youngest visitors from 3 years, although concentration and interest naturally increase the older children get.

The Edwin-Scharff-Museum is a fantastic mix of art museum, children´s museum and experimental space. Here time flies incredibly fast, and you still haven´t had chance to take it all in at the end.
A wonderful idea are the large puzzles that children can use to recreate art objects in the art museum, which enables adults to visit this part of the museum without the kids getting bored.

The current exhibition ›ARCHITEKTIERISCH – buildings made by humans and animals‹ can be discovered up until 19th September 2021. Alternating exhibitions give the impression of constantly stepping into a new world. Nothing looks the same, making it exciting time and again. In many cases, there are puzzle books accompanying the exhibition and encouraging you to explore.

...and around Ulm

What´s more, the butterfly house (Schmetterlingshaus) at Ulm University´s botanical garden is a beautiful place to discover and above all keep warm during the cold winter months. A particularly interesting feature are the nocturnal tours illuminated by torchlight.

Those wanting to travel a few kilometres into the surrounding area of Ulm or Neu-Ulm, will find other great destinations. For example the bee museum (Bienenmuseum) in Illertissen, various indoor playgrounds and swimming pools or even the prehistoric museum (Urgeschichtliches Museum) in Blaubeuren.
