The Danube is more than just a river. It is a unifying force between countries, cultures, and histories. It serves as a lifeline for the villages and towns along its banks. In "People by the River," artist Christian Schmiedbauer explores the experiences of local residents and their relationship with the Danube.
The gallery exhibition is based on Schmiedbauer's graphic novel of the same name, which received an award from the Free State of Bavaria. In his graphic novel, the artist recounts his journey along the Danube—from its source in the Black Forest to the Danube Delta on the Black Sea. Along the way, he portrays the people who live along this river. Their stories and experiences vividly illustrate how the river shapes the lives and identities of those who live there.
